What is critical illness cover and how does it work?

Critical illness cover provides a lump sum in the event that the policy holder is diagnosed with a specified critical illness during the policy term. Payments could be made if the policy was diagnosed with for example, Cancer, Heart Attack, Loss of limbs, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Stroke and many more.

The key here is that the payment is made on diagnosis that meets the insurer’s policy wording, so the condition does not need to be terminal in order to make a claim.

The insurer will expect the condition to have progressed to a certain stage, or for the illness to affective cognitive function to a laid down standard.

Whilst there are numerous illnesses covered, there are 4 main illnesses that were responsible for just under 90% of all claims. And they are….

Cancer 63.8%

Heart related 12.7%

Stroke 7.8%

Multiple Sclerosis 3.9%

There are other valuable covers available such as children’s cover, partial cover for less serious forms of a condition, and also specialist help for certain conditions with some insurers.

This is just an overview of critical illness cover and does not constitute advice. In order to understand specific policies and how they might benefit you, please speak to one of our advisers…….
